De kinderen dachten dachten vanochtend, laten we de tafel eens dekken voor het ontbijt. Natuurlijk horen hier hagelslag en pindakaas bij. Helaas staan die in een van de kastjes boven het aanrecht maar dat is voor Jelle geen probleem. Gelukkig ging er niks fout en hebben geen filmpje voor "de leukste thuis".

This morning the kids thought, lets set the table for breakfast. And hagelslag (choclate sprinkles) and peatnut butter are part of a good Dutch breakfast and they are in a cupboard over the ktichen bench. No problem for Jelle, he climbed on the bench using a drawer and Bobs your uncle. Luckely nothing went wrong otherwise we would have had a entry for "Hong Kongs funniest home videos".

family picnic

Op de laatste Vrijdag van elke maand is er een familiepicnic op school. De ouders mogen dan tijdens lunchtijd naar school komen en samen met de kinderen eten. Natuurlijk was ik het alweer vergeten dus de broodtrommeltjes had is 'smorgens vroeg al gemaakt, terwijl het natuurlijk leuk is om een lekkere lunch voor de kinderen klaar te maken vlak voordat je erheen gaat.Veel mensen hadden sushi gemaakt of lekkere pannenkoeken (of hebben de helpers die gemaakt?). Daar zaten mijn kinderen bij met hun twee bruine boterhammen en een appel. Ik zal mijn agenda maar weer eens uit het stof gaan halen om al deze dingen de volgende keer NIET te vergeten.

Every last Friday of the month the school organises a family picnic. The parents are allowed to come to school and share a nice lunch with their children. Typically me, I had forgotten all about this whole event and had prepared the children's lunches early that morning. The idea is to prepare a nice lunch and share it together with your children. A lot of people had made sushi or pancakes (or did their helpers prepare them?), and there were my kids with two wholemeal sandwiches and an apple. Well, I think I will have to dust off my agenda so I won't forget these things next time.

weer even op de hoogte/ update

Ik zal maar weer eens een logje schrijven over afgelopen week. Tony is afgelopen zaterdag terug gekomen uit Nederland/ Engeland/Duitsland en inmiddels ook alweer vertrokken naar Bangkok. Hij is vanmiddag vertrokken en komt Zaterdag weer terug. Ik vind het erg ongezellig zo maar hij moet wel zijn klanten leren kennen. Nu maar hopen dat het na de kerstvakantie een beetje minder wordt met reizen. Tja en zijn regio is nu eenmaal Asia Pacific en Australie.

Afgelopen weekend hebben we het dus rustig aan gedaan, Tony moest weer een beetje acclimatiseren en ik had ook niet zoveel zin om mij druk te maken, en het weer was ook niet echt lekker, veel regen. Gisteren ben ik met Almudena, Carolien en Leene naar Shenzhen geweest. Shenzhen ligt net over de grens in China, het is maar een klein half uurtje met de trein, maar al met al duurde het wel een uur voordat we met paspoort en visum handelingen eindelijk klaar waren. Meteen naast het station is een winkelcentrum waar je dus ontzettend goedkoop inkopen kunt doen. Je moet er flink onderhandelen, daar moest ik wel een beetje aan wennen, maar na een tijdje begint het wel leuk te worden. ik heb voor Lotte een Kipling tasje gescoord voor 5 Euro en ik heb bij een klerenmaakster twee linnen broeken en een jurk besteld voor nog geen 30 Euro. Gisteravond was het ook het begin van het Mid Autumn Festival en was er een avondje gepland in het park van Hong Lok Yuen met muziek en chinese festiviteiten.

Helaas was het afgelast wegens slechte weersvooruitzichten waardoor we een alternatiefje moesten verzinnen. We zijn dus met dezelfde dames van Shenzhen maar inclusief gezinnen naar Victoria Park vertrokken met de trein. Het was een behoorlijke toestand, en helaas hadden we meer verwacht dan wat er aangeboden werd.

Het was ook nog eens beredruk we zijn dus redelijk snel ook weer richting huis vertrokken. Vandaag dus Tony naar het station gebracht waar hij een taxi naar het vliegveld heeft genomen en daarna ben ik met de kinderen die een vrije dag hadden maar weer eens het zwembad ingedoken.

I think it's about time for another update so here I am. Another week has passed and on Saturday Tony came home after 10 days in Europe. I was really happy to see him again and very sad that I had to say good-bye to him again this morning as he had to leave on another trip. This time to Bangkok. I understand that he has to get to know his contacts and after all his region of work is Asia Pacific and Australia. I just hope that he will spend a little bit more time home after the Christmas holidays.

This weekend we took it easy as Tony had to get back into this timezone and I was happy to relax as well. The weather was horrible anyway, so basically we stayed at home.

Yesterday Almudena, Carolien, Leene and I went to Shenzhen for the day. Great bargain shopping in China. The ride by train takes less than half an hour from here. The passport and visa business takes a bit longer, but after an hour we could finally start shopping. I you are a shopaholic, this is the place to be. You need to bargain a lot and in the beginning i wasn't very comfortable doing so but after a while you get the idea. It's like playing a game basically, we all have to play along, look upset as they tell you how much they want you to pay for that handbag (DVD, scarf, Pair of shoes) and tell them your price. If you can't agree just walk away, the next shop has the same thing anyway, but mostly they will stop you and agree with your price, very funny. Had a great time, I think I will be back before we go to Europe this Christmas.

In the evening there was a celebration planned in Hong Lok Yuen Park but due to some weather warnings they cancelled the celebrations. We had to think of an alternative for the Mid Autumn Celebrations. We decided to go to Victoria Park instead, that's on Hong Kong Island. We went there together with the ladies I went to Shenzhen with and their families. We travelled by train, which was kind of stressful.

Unfortunately the celebrations weren't what we had expected and it was very crowded. We couldn't really see the shows because of the crowds and the children were a bit dissappointed that they couldn's see anything either. We didn't stay very long and came home at about 10.45 pm. The children could sleep in this morning because it was a holiday. After I dropped Tony off at the train station today we went to the pool.

Inmiddels is de tuin ongeveer af, maar de fotoos volgen later, want ik wil eerst dat Tony het ziet. Hij komt Zaterdag terug uit Europa. Hij heeft dan 10 dagen in Nederland, Engeland en Duitsland doorgebracht.

Our garden is almost finished, but I am going to post the pictures later, because I want Tony to see it first. He will be coming home on Saturday from an 10 day business trip to the Netherlands, England an Germany.

Visite / visitor

Een paar weken geleden kreeg ik een email van Sunday, een van de juffen op de AIS in Sydney. Haar man zit bij de marine in Australie en hij is drie maanden van huis. Morgen komt hij aan in Hong Kong en Sunday had besloten, dat ze haar man wel weer wilde zien, dus zou ze met haar 7 maanden oude dochtertje naar Hong Kong komen om zijn vrije dagen met hem te verbrengen. En aangezien wij nu natuurlijk hier wonen wilde zij graag een dagje bij ons doorbrengen. Ik heb haar met de auto uit Kowloon Tong opgehaald met de geleende Tomtom van Carolien (nogmaals hartelijk bedankt Carolien). We hebben weer lekker bijgekletst over de school in Sydney en Lotte en Jelle hebben heerlijk met Kiersten gespeeld. Met het avond eten hebben we tacos gegeten, als herinnering aan de vrijdag lunch die ik samen met Betty met veel liefde op school in Sydney verzorgde, die toevallig ook nog een van haar favorieten was.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Sunday, one of the elementary teachers at the AIS in Sydney ( if we would have stayed in Sydney, she would have been Jelle's teacher). She was going to spend a week in Hong Kong, because her husband, who is in the Australian Navy is going to dock here tomorrow. He is staying away from home for three months and Sunday decided she wanted to spend his week off here with him and their little girl. She arrived in Hong Kong yesterday and had one day to kill, so she asked me if I would like to spend this day with her. I picked her up in Kowloon Tong and after we had lunch together, we headed back home, picked up the kids from school and spent our afternoon chatting and talking about the school back in Sydney. Lotte and Jelle really enjoyed having a little 'sister' for the day and really enjoyed playing with her. For dinner we had beef tacos, one of her favorites of school lunches, Betty and I used to prepare once every two weeks.

Youri goes hiking

Youri werd gisterochtend gebeld door zijn vriend Casper, een van de nederlandse kinderen op school met de vraag of hij zin had om de berg achter ons huis te gaan beklimmen samen met Casper's vader. Daar had hij wel zin in, dus met een paar flessen water en een appel en natuurlijk een fototoestelletje gingen zij op pad. Het weer was helaas niet zo helder en een beetje benauwd maar volgens mij heeft hij het wel naar zijn zin gehad, want toen hem gevraagd werd of hij volgende week weer mee wil zei hij meteen ja.

One of Youri's friends called him yesterday asking him if he wanted to go hiking up 'Cloudy Hill' with him and his dad. This hill is located behind our house. Youri decided he would like to do that and after we packed two bottles of water an apple and a camera of course they left. Unfortunately the view was a little hazy, hence the name and it was quite humid, but I still think he had fun, because when they asked him if he would like to go next week he immediately said "yes".

Werk / Work

We zitten nu alweer 10 weken in Hong Kong, de kinderen zitten op school en we beginnen ons al echt thuis te voelen hier.

Wat zeker beter is dan in Australie is het werk. Het laatste jaar in Sydney was werk wijs nou niet echt om over naar huis te schrijven met de onzekerheden, de investerings stop etc etc.

Dat is hier wel anders, ik moet echt weer wennen aan werken, de dagen vliegen voorbij en soms zie ik door de bomen het bos niet meer.

Ik heb nu projekten in Thailand, India, Malaysia, Filipijnen, Nieuw Zeeland en Australie, en binnenkort komen daar Indonesie en Vietnam bij. We zitten dus niet stil. Ook het on-site wereldje is voor mij relatief nieuw en dat maakt dat het soms even langer duurt dan je zelf wilt, maar ik heb het gruwelijk naar mijn zin, leer elke dag weer wat erbij over hoe om te gaan met Aziaten en Duitsers en ben er van overtuigd dat deze drie jaar voorbij vliegen.

It has already been 10 weeks, 10 weeks and slowly we are getting used to Hong Kong. The kids started school and the garden is finally showing some signs of improvement. Sandra is going out with some other ladies so yes we are settling in.

One thing is much better than in Australia, WORK. The last year in Sydney was not good work wise, with stupid decisions from the MD, the investment stop, the take over etc etc.

That’s all different here, work galore. I’ve got projects in India, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, New Zealand and Australia and soon Vietnam and Indonesia will be on the list. I really have to get used to the fact I have to work again, and that’s all good, the days are too short and every now and again I don’t know where to start. On-site is relatively new to me so sometimes I take a bit longer than I want. But I learn a bit more every day on our product range, how to manage all the information and inquiries and how to deal with both Asians and Germans as they are from different galaxies. I’m having a bloody good time and think the coming three years will be over before we know it.

just for fun

Voordat we naar Hong Kong gingen verhuizen hadden we de kinderen gevraagd of ze een schilderij met het thema Australie wilden maken. Lotte en Jelle hebben meteen een mooi schilderij gemaakt. Youri had er toen niet zo heel erg veel zin in, maar uiteindelijk heeft ook hij z'n werkstuk af. Weliswaar deze week, maar beter laat dan nooit. Dit is het resultaat en ze hebben een mooi plekje gekregen in huis.

Before we moved to Hong Kong we asked the children if they wanted to make a painting with Australia as the theme. Lotte and Jelle immediately made a beautiful painting. Youri needed a little more persuasion but he finally finished his last week. This is the result and they deserve a prime spot in the house.
