House hunting / huizenjacht

It's that time again expats in Singapore hate. The end of lease. What to do , will the landlord come with the normal 15% increase or is he reasonable this time and keep the rent the same?

For us these questions are now more relevant than ever. Since we have been localised we have to pay the rent ourselves, so every dollar we can save is one.

When asked the landlord told us he will increase as the last time there was a lot of construction going on and now it is quiet. this plus the fact that our neighbor is thinking of knocking his house down let us to the decision to look for a new house. With Youri in his final year you don't need all kind of noise, dust etc around you.

But slowly the doubt is creeping in. The landlord told us he is reconsidering keeping the rent the same and when talking to the neighbours it could take 6 months to 3 years for them to make up their mind, so what to do, what to do.

In the mean time we have been looking at some other houses but have not found anything decent yet. It is either to far away, too old, not enough bed rooms, or just plain horrible.

We still have time, and we will keep looking but we want to settle this ASAP.

Negotiate hard to have the rent stay the same or reduced. There are lots of houses on my road for rent and expats are moving out in droves. Companies are not prepared to pay these ridiculous hiking rents. Better he has a family paying an affordable rent in the house and maintaining it. A house left empty in the unforgiving humid climate of Singapore rots rapidly. It is not the climate now to increase. He is aware. Hold fast to keeping the rent as it is! Best of luck! I got a $2,500 reduction last lease renewal time.
