family camp

Given the fact the school year is coming to an end, a bit early due to the swine flu, and some of us are leaving HK it seemed like a good idea to do it now.
So we organised a camping weekend to Pui O beach where they put up tents for you with a BBQ, all the plates, cups etc and you can bring your own stuff or buy it from the Thai restaurant they have there.
10 Families, in total 18 adults and 22 kids, responded to my call and Hanneke had to rent a touring bus to get us all to the camp site. That is all of us and all the stuff we thought we needed for one night out in the HK bush. 20 m3 of clothes, matresses, pillows, toys, hair dryers, donald duck magazines, Chinese study material, beer, beer, beer, meat etc etc, I think Kimberly even brought the Air Conditioning.
With the bus having only a couple of m3 of storage space we had to improvise a little and use the first 5 or 6 rows as storage. After an hour trip we arrived at the site and I must say it was not to bad. They put us on a separate field a bit higher than the surrounding grass land, which later on turned out to be a good thing, there was a nice "loungie Thai", to hang when you were getting to hot, the beach had sand so the boys could play soccer and the water was wet so the kids could splash around.
Everybody was having a ball. At around 18.30 the fire was lit for the BBQ and we were sitting on the terrace next to the beach enjoying a nice warm evening with friends, good food, cold beer what more do you want.
OK we had to drink a lot of beer as it was warm, not to say hot, or you could even call it very hot, but the kids were playing with the glow sticks and the plastic aeroplanes and when it got to hot we just took a dip in the sea.
When it was time to go to bed we finally understood how hot it was, in the tents the heat was trapped and at our field there was no wind so we were sweating like Dutch cheese outside a refrigerator, and I tell you that is not nice. I told Sas I wished it would rain.
And the rain came but not yet. At around 4 o'clock we decided to take a little stroll on the beach as it was impossible to sleep and at the shore line there was a little wind to give some relief, but suddenly it started to drip and the drips became drops and the drops became big drops and they became cats and dogs, and within seconds it poured out of the sky.
We were soaked to the bone and all our stuff was as well, all the chairs, clothes, breakfast cereal, CD players, everything was soaked. Tents started to leak as no tent can cope with this kind of water.
Then the lightining and thunder came and some kids woke up and started to cry, but even worse mums woke up and came out screaming for help (just kidding). OK some kids woke up and some mums came out of the tent but more because it was as wet inside as outside so why not take a nice cold beer.
Around 6 o'clock it stopped and we could have a look at the damage, everything was wet, all the bread and other stuff we bought for breakfast was soaked except for one loaf, which we decided to give to the kids.
The grass land around our field was flooded with a meter of water and some water buffalo's were testing their new pool. The restaurant lost a couple of party tents and had some water damage but that was it.
We decided not to wait till 12 but to call taxis and head for HLY. At 0900 and using 10 taxis everybody was home, wet, tired but happy not to have missed this.
A camping trip with friends good food, drinks and adventure what more do you want, for sure this familycamp will be talked about for some years to come, as the one you should have been at.
