Sri Lanka day 1

Gisteren zijn we dan eindelijk in Sri Lanka aangekomen. Sajee stond op het vliegveld te wachten met een van haar zussen en een busje om ons naar de villa te brengen. Onderweg zagen we de overblijfselen van de oorlog in de vele militairen met machine geweren (Youri wil gaan tellen hoeveel hij er ziet in de drie weken, ik denk niet dat hij het gaat volhouden). Sajee heeft Villa Rose voor ons geboekt. Het is erg leuk, een open villa met een aantal kamers in koloniale stijl, en oranje klamboes.

Vanochtend hebben we heerlijk ontbeten, ze verkopen hier fantastisch brood. Daarna heeft Sajee ons opgehaald en hebben we de dag doorgebacht bij haar moeder en zusjes. Natuurlijk hadden we kadootjes meegebracht en gelukkig konden de kids het goed met elkaar vinden zodat de dag lekker snel ging. Voor het diner had Sajee ook de ambassadeur uitgenodigd waar ze voor gewerkt had in Polen en de oud werkgeefster van haar moeder, heel leuk.

Voor de jongens was het spelen met de glow sticks en daarna het vinden van vuurvliegjes het hoogtepunt van het bezoek. Morgen met de tuk tuk op stap.

We are here, finally in Sri Lanka, after months of preparation and anticipation we have made it. After a smooth flight with Air Lanka and a fast trip through customs Sajee and Chandrika (her sister) were there to pick us up and to bring us to Villa Rose, our home for the next three nights. The first thing Youri saw was a big machine gun, a reminder of the war that ended a year ago, and he said he is going to count the guns he sees ( think he will not last a day). The trip in the bus was bringing back old memories of near misses, honking bus drivers, tuk-tuk and animals on the road. Villa Rose is a nice place with good rooms and it's relaxing.

After a good night's sleep and a breakfast, with excellent local bread, Sajee came and picked us up for a day at her place. We brought gifts for the whole family and they kept feeding us. We watched a cricket match played between the palm trees on the plot next door. Very handy as you only have to climb the tree when you get thirsty.

Luckily the kids got along fine and they all played volleyball and after dinner, they played with the glow sticks and caught fire flies, which was the highlight for Jelle. Sajees family took us in like family and we really had a good time.
