Olifanten weeshuis / Elephant orphanage

Vandaag was het een dag van herinneringen ophalen, en eindelijk vertrekken uit Colombo. Sam en Banuka hebben ons bij Villa Rose opgehaald voor de rit naar Dambulla via het olifanten weeshuis. Onderweg een hoop bekende dingen gezien, alle stalletjes met ananas, cashews etc. heerlijk. De kids zitten achterin en moeten toch nog een beetje wennen,de DS is leuker dan Sri Lanka. Vanaf morgen geen DS meer in de auto. Bij het weeshuis aangekomen blijkt er toch een hoop verandert, 16 jaar geleden was de entree vrij en kon je een donatie doen, nu moet je als toerist 2000 LKR betalen en als je wilt filmen een extra 1500. Olifanten de fles geven kost 550 ja kapitalisme heeft Sri Lanka bereikt. Ook de lunches zijn een stuk duurder geworden. Nu betaal je ongeveer 40 Sing voor een buffet met z'n vijfjes inclusief een glaasje sap.

De olifanten blijven naturlijk leuk en het werk wat gedaan wordt is erg goed. De kids hebben erg genoten van de hoeveelheid olifanten en het feit dat je er zo dicht bij kunt komen. Ook het kijken naar badderende olifanten verveelt nooit.

Today we really start our trip. Sam and Baduka picked us up for the ride to Dambulla and on the way visiting the elephant orphanage near Kandy. Everything seems so familiar, the road side stalls with an abundance of pineapple, cashews, mangoes and coconut, the smiling people, with the white teeth contrasting their dark skin, the crazy traffic and the undisturbed look on our driver's face when a big Tata bus is coming straight at us only to steer left at the last minute.

Some things though have changed, Sri Lanka has become more expensive. 16 years ago we paid nothing to get into the orphanage and we were asked to make a donation, now there is a fixed entrance fee of 2000 LKR with a surcharge for a video camera. If you want to feed a baby elephant some milk it will cost LKR 550 , also there are way more people, but this is all good for Sri Lanka and they have to find the balance in this.

Also lunch has gone up even though I have to admit we are not having lunch in the same places we did 16 years ago due to the kids, but 40 Sing is a normal price for a 5 person buffet including a fruit juice. I hope this will change as we get further away from Colombo.

The elephants are still the same, fascinating and fun to watch. The kids really had a good time due to the sheer number of jumbos, the little baby elephants and the behaviour of the giants in the river. 'A good start of our tour'.
