temple of the 10,000 buddha's

Op de vierde dag van het chinees nieuwjaar zijn we naar Shatin gereden voor een bezoek aan de tempel met de 10,000 boeddha's en ik overdrijf niet als ik zeg dat ik denk dat het er wel meer zijn.

De tempel staat boven op een heuvel en het pad ernaar toe wordt geflankeerd door gouden boeddha achtige figuren met allemaal andere gezichten en houdingen, dit leidt je af van de steilheid van de klim. Boven heb je een aantal tempels met langs de wanden allemaal hele kleine boeddha's, zo kom je tot 10,000.


Een van de dingen die Chinezen doen met nieuwjaar is de toekomst laten voorspellen, overal zie je handlezers, gezichtlezers, theelezers, kaartlezers en weet ik veel wat ze allemaal nog meer lezen. In de tempel lezen ze stokjes, je neemt een houten cilindrische container gevuld met stokjes en gaat op je knieen voor het altaar zitten en terwijl je bidt tot Boeddha, een chinese god of tot je voorouders schudt je de container rustig op en neer terwijl je hem een beetje schuin van je af houdt. Na verloop van tijd valt er een stokje uit, je sluit je gebed af en gaat met je stokje naar een stalletje waar het nummer op je stokje overeenkomt met een stuk tekst, hiermee ga je naar een toekomst voorspeller die de tekst samen met je geboorte jaar en datum, geslacht, leeftijd etc omtovert in een voorspeling voor het jaar van de Rat. Er is echter 1 probleem, de tekst is in Chinees en de voorspeller spreekt alleen maar Kantonees, dus ook dit jaar moeten we maar gewoon afwachten wat de toekomst brengt


On the fourth day we went to the temple with the 10,000 buddha's and I kid you not there are more than 10,000 of them. The temple is situated on top of a steep hill and the path up is flanked by numberous golden buddha like figures in all sort of shapes and with all different faces. This distracted the kids from the fact that it was a long climb.

Around Chinese New Year Hong Kong people come to pay tribute to their ancestors and pray to all kinds of local gods and to buddha, so it was quite busy.

Another thing they do is visit fortune tellers, in the temple you pick up a canister with sticks and you start to pray to Buddha while shaking the canister, at some point a stick drops out and this stick contains a message. This message is a key for the fortune teller and he tells you what the year of the rat will bring you. One small problem though, the message on the stick is in Chinese and the Fortune tellers only speak Cantonese. So again we have to just wait and see what the future brings.

All in all a impressing visit, and one we will repeat in a couple of months.
