DACHAU

ARBEIT MACHT FREI

Alhoewel we vanochtend bij het opstaan nog geen plannen hadden, hebben we tijdens het ontbijt besloten om naar Dachau te gaan. Youri wilde heel graag het voormalige nazi concentratie kamp bezoeken.

Het was heel indrukwekkend. Het begint al als je door de poort loopt met de bovengenoemde tekst in het hek.

Op de audio tour hoor je allerlei verhalen van overlevenden die vertellen hoe ze bij binnenkomst al hun kleren uit moesten trekken. Kaal geschoren en ontluisd werden en dan een pakje kleren kregen, sommige te groot sommige te klein.

En er werd alleen maar gewerkt onder een sadistisch kamp regime waar mensen met te weinig eten en slechte sanitaire voorzieningen gemarteld en gekleineerd werden.

Als je door het kamp loopt en je ziet de barakken waar mensen drie hoog werden gestapeld, de fotoos en de ovens, dan kan het niet anders dan dat je dit nooit meer wilt zien gebeuren.

Hoe kan het dat mensen zo met elkaar omgaan? Maar als je om je heen kijkt gebeurt het nog steeds. 

We worden schijnbaar niet wijzer. Voor ons was het een heel indrukwekkende gebeurtenis die we ons hele leven niet zullen vergeten.

We didn't really have plans for today but Youri proposed to go to Dachau this morning as he really wanted to visit the former nazi Concentration camp.

And it is very impressive. Even on a beautiful day as today it looks like you enter a black and white world. Depressing from the moment you enter the Jour gate with the world famous text ARBEIT MACHT FREI.

You are provided with a audio tour which includes stories from Dachau survivors that give you goose bumps. They tell you how they were led through the gates and into the bunker where they had to strip naked, stripped of all their belonings and their hair. After a delicing treatment and a shower they were given the striped pyjamas.

The barracks were crammped stacked three layers high. the beds were straw sacks and later no matrass at all. People were there to work under the sadistic SS-regime. Humiliated and tortured as they were seen as "non humans" only on this earth to be used as slaves, and when they outlived their purpose they were killed and burned in the furnaces.

The whole atmosphere is depressing and confronting but also educational and somehow every person on earth should visit one of the former concentration camps to learn how stupid people can be. It is sad to see that even now humanity has not learned anything from this as there are still concentration camps today in a lot of countries around the world as the nazi's were not the only sick bastards.

For us it was a visit that we will never forget and it reminds us how lucky we are.
